The future of fashion fulfilment is increasingly driven by innovation and the ability to adapt flexibly to the dynamics of the market. At Modexpress, standing still is not an option. As a leading customised fashion fulfilment partner, Modexpress has once again taken an innovative step forward with the implementation of the latest automated pocket sorter system. This advanced technology elevates order processing to the next level. It’s faster, error-free, and seamlessly integrating various processes and channels into one unified system. In a complex fashion industry, smart solutions are essential and Modexpress is leading the way with innovation.

One solution for e-commerce and retail

With the pocket sorter, Modexpress gains the flexibility to process both hanging and flat-packed goods in one streamlined, automated flow. This versatility makes the system ideal for both e-commerce fulfilment and store replenishment. The result is a faster process and a significant boost in efficiency. “What makes this technology stand out is its ability to handle both channels: e-commerce and physical retail, within a single solution,” explains Jan van Vlokhoven, Chief Information Officer at Modexpress. “This gives us the flexibility to process both high volumes of e-commerce orders and smaller store replenishments quickly and accurately.”

More efficient and faster order processing

While Modexpress has previously implemented mechanisation for e-commerce, the pocket sorter offers much more. The system processes large batches from multiple clients, significantly simplifying workflow management. “It’s faster, more efficient, and helps us meet the growing demands of the fashion industry,” says Van Vlokhoven.

What makes the pocket sorter so effective is its ability to manage thousands of pockets suspended from a rail system. Each pocket contains a single product, which is then automatically sorted into the correct order. The benefits for customers are immediately clear: the pocket sorter enables faster turnaround times, improves control, and ensures 100% traceability of every item from storage to dispatch.

“We can process large volumes of orders simultaneously, including multi-client orders,” says Dave van Alem, IT Manager at Modexpress. “This provides us with tremendous flexibility, even during peak seasons.” The system automates everything from sorting to packing and shipping, requiring minimal human intervention. This saves time, reduces the risk of errors, and enhances customer satisfaction.

Sustainability and efficiency: green impact

Beyond operational efficiency, this innovation also offers significant sustainability benefits. The way the pocket sorter handles packaging and shipping minimises the use of packing materials.

“Our packing machine ensures that we reduce empty space in boxes, allowing carriers to transport more parcels per trip,” Van Vlokhoven explains. “This not only reduces costs but also lowers the environmental footprint of Modexpress and our clients.”

By optimising material usage, Modexpress can cut shipping costs while minimising environmental impact.

Innovation in action: 7.500 items per hour

The first customer feedback, including that from Dutch fashion brand Circle of Trust, has been overwhelmingly positive. “During site tours, clients immediately recognise the advantages of the pocket sorter: a structured, controlled process with maximum transparency,” says Van Alem.

The speed and precision of the system reinforce confidence in the quality of order processing. Since its implementation in December 2024, the pocket sorter has been processing up to 7,500 items per hour. “We want to involve more clients to maximise the potential of this mechanisation,” Van Vlokhoven adds. “Additionally, we are expanding our facility with extra picking floors to further increase capacity.”

This innovation is just one of many investments Modexpress is making in advanced technologies. By continuously automating and optimising processes, the company is responding to the ever-evolving demands of the fashion industry.

Furthermore, RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) technology is being integrated, enabling faster and more precise tracking of products from arrival to dispatch. Clients using RFID receive items with RFID tags, allowing for real-time tracking.

The new standard in fashion fulfilment

“The pocket sorter is a crucial step in Modexpress’s automation strategy, and we will continue investing in innovations that help us meet the industry’s increasing demands,” concludes Van Vlokhoven. By implementing this technology in fashion fulfilment, Modexpress supports its clients’ growth worldwide, both nationally and internationally. The pocket sorter reinforces Modexpress’s position as a leading fulfilment provider, with a lasting focus on efficiency, customer satisfaction, and sustainability.
